Lost Cat Reunited with Family After 536 Days of Hope and Patience

For any pet parent, the thought of losing a beloved animal is heartbreaking. When a cat disappears, especially one who has become a cherished member of the family, the sense of loss can be profound. That was the reality for Mindy Criner and her husband Luke, whose cat vanished from their Virginia home and remained missing for an astonishing 536 days. Their story, which recently resurfaced online, is a remarkable example of hope, resilience, and the unbreakable bond between humans and their pets.
Cat, as he was affectionately named, was adopted from the Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter. Initially shy and reserved, he preferred to sit quietly while other kittens played. Yet Mindy Criner sensed that all he needed was a little love and patience. According to her account shared with The Dodo, “You could see in his eyes he just needed love.” With time and care, Cat blossomed into a confident, affectionate companion. He quickly bonded with every member of the household, including the couple’s baby, and became an integral part of the family’s daily life.
As Cat grew more comfortable in his environment, he enjoyed exploring the yard and nearby areas. One day, during one of his routine adventures, he didn’t return. Criner immediately sprang into action, reaching out to the Lost & Found Pets – Hampton Roads, VA, Facebook page and launching a comprehensive search. They placed food and a litter box outside, hoping familiar scents would guide him back. Friends helped monitor makeshift shelters scattered throughout the neighborhood. Posters went up. Night after night, the Criners walked the streets calling his name.
Despite their efforts, days turned into weeks, then months. Eventually, over a year passed. “Weeks turned to a year, then a little more and every day that crack in my broken heart got a little bigger,” Criner told The Dodo. The emotional toll of losing a pet, especially one so deeply loved, was immense. Yet the family never fully gave up hope.
Then, unexpectedly, the call came. Animal control had located a cat matching Cat’s description. The Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter had scanned a microchip and found Mindy Criner’s contact information. She rushed to the shelter, struggling to hold back tears. There, she learned that a local man had been feeding Cat for nearly a year, believing him to be a stray. After Cat survived being hit by a car, the man contacted animal control, leading to the discovery of his true identity.
