Senior Dog Left On Lawn With Heartbreaking Note Begs For One Last Chance
When a 13-year-old dachshund mix named Reese was found abandoned on a lawn in Fayetteville, Georgia, she wasn’t alone. Alongside her was a handwritten note that read, “Please take care of my dog. I love her so much.” The message, left by her former owner, revealed a heartbreaking decision: with four children and no time to care for Reese, they felt they had no other option. This sad story of a senior dog left behind has since taken a hopeful turn, thanks to the kindness of strangers and the dedication of a local animal rescue group.
Reese’s story began when a resident discovered the small dog on her property. Though she couldn’t keep Reese herself, she took her in temporarily and shared her story in a private Facebook group. That post quickly caught the attention of Royal Animal Refuge, a local rescue organization committed to helping abandoned pets find safety and love. Shelter director Mariel Weigand responded to the call for help and began coordinating Reese’s next steps.
“When we heard about it, obviously we were upset,” Weigand told The Dodo. “But at the same time, we thought, ‘Maybe they just didn’t know what to do or who to turn to.’” She explained that one of their local animal control facilities does not accept surrenders, which can leave pet owners with very few options during times of crisis. Reese’s former owner may have felt overwhelmed and desperate, but the note made it clear that letting her go was not a decision made lightly.

Royal Animal Refuge quickly stepped in to find a foster home for Reese. They reached out to one of their experienced foster caregivers, Robyn Klein. But when Klein’s mother, Suzy Reeves, met Reese, something special happened. Reeves, who had recently lost her own beloved dog, felt an immediate connection with the senior dachshund. Although she initially agreed to foster Reese, it soon became clear that this was more than a temporary arrangement.
