Humane Fort Wayne urges responsible pet adoption during holiday season – WPTA

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) – The holiday season brings increased interest in surprising children with puppies and kittens, but Humane Fort Wayne wants families to consider the long-term commitment before deciding to adopt.

“These little dudes are not for the faint of the heart! They’re super cute, but this guy is gonna get to be 60 pounds,” Gibson said. “They’re gonna chew your shoes, they’re gonna have to be potty-trained, they’re gonna have to be crate-trained, they are a commitment.”

“Sometimes what happens is, this person needs someone with a smaller dog, and they end up with a Great Dane puppy,” Gibson said. “And that becomes a problem within a few weeks.”

“It’s almost like a gift card for animals,” Gibson said. “It covers that adoption fee and then when that individual is ready, they can come in and get the animal they feel fits their family and their needs.”
