Pet dumping rises across Texoma after the holidays – News Channel 6

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – Across Texoma, animal control officers and rescue groups are seeing a surge in abandoned pets after being given as holiday gifts.
According to the Iowa Park Animal Control, officers have picked up more than 15 domesticated animals just this week that they believe were dumped following the holidays.
One officer said the holiday season often brings an increase in people trying to sell puppies and kittens. When those animals do not sell, many are abandoned and left to die. More often, officers said, pets are dumped once the reality of ownership sets in and families realize they are unable to care for the animal or were not prepared for the long-term commitment.

“People just get in their mind it’s going to be a cute, adorable thing to do, but then they don’t think about the 14 years of care that animal is going to take,” Dison said.
“We had a litter of puppies yesterday, we picked up from Middle Lake, seven of them, about maybe three months old, they were scared to death. They were literally shaking, afraid to be touched, cowering,” Dison said.
