Even cold-loving dogs are at risk in freezing weather – WBRC

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – With freezing temperatures moving into the Birmingham area this weekend, pet owners are being reminded that even dogs that love the cold can face serious risks if conditions aren’t right.
The Greater Birmingham Humane Society says dogs left tied up, in wet or icy areas, or without access to dry shelter and unfrozen water can quickly develop hypothermia. This is especially dangerous for older, sick or thin-coated dogs.
“Even cold-loving breeds like huskies can be in danger during freezing weather,” said Allison Black Cornelius, CEO of the Greater Birmingham Humane Society. “If you see a pet that might be in trouble, we can help.”

Cornelius advises that if it’s too cold for you to stay outside comfortably, it’s too cold for your pet. Dogs should always have access to a dry, warm space and fresh water, even in freezing weather.
“That helps our vets and officers determine how serious the situation is and how quickly we need to respond,” she said.
