Baby Orangutans Learning How to Crack Open a Coconut Are Too Cute for Words

Some baby animals’ survival skills are instinctual, while others must be learned from their mothers. For these orphaned baby orangutans who don’t have moms to teach them, this learning happens at jungle school with their caretakers. The Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) rescues orangutans in need and cares for them in rescue centers, where they’re taught how to care for themselves. They recently shared a clip of some little ones learning how to crack open a coconut, and it’s guaranteed to make you smile.
Watch and listen as BOSF explains how the learning process works and as the babies try out their new skills. Valentino, who’s earned the title of class clown, needs a little extra help and heads to his foster mom for some extra attention, and it’s so sweet to see!
BOSF shares more in the video’s caption, “Valentino and friends sat for fruit time at Jungle School. The lesson was coconut cracking. Some learned fast, others watched and tried until the shell opened. These moments help young orangutans learn to find and eat food. Caregivers show steps, and the orangutans practice together to help Valentino and classmates learn.”
