Sunshine and more pets are up for adoption in Phoenix-area shelters – The Arizona Republic

Every year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, about 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.
Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a select number of the many pets available for adoption at Valley shelters. To check the status of a specific animal, please contact the shelter directly.

At five years old, these sweet guinea pig sisters found themselves being surrendered to the shelter after their previous family unfortunately did not have the time to care for them any longer. Upon first glance, it is easy to tell how much these cuties not only love each other but they also love getting attention from people — especially if snacks are involved!
Kaia tends to be a bit more brave and open to pets at first but once Cucumber sees how much fun her sis is having, she comes over and also wants to get the same amount of attention. Guinea pigs are incredibly social creatures who make wonderful pets as long as the proper research has been done as they need a specialized diet and environment. Additionally, it is important to keep guinea pigs of the opposite sex separated as to avoid having unwanted litters!
