Stray Dog Climbs Into Abandoned House To Survive Incoming Snowstorm | The Animal Rescue Site

As a brutal winter storm loomed over St. Louis, Missouri, a frightened pit bull took shelter in the only place he could find—an abandoned home with no walls to shield him from the cold. The heartbreaking image of a dog huddled on the second floor of a decaying structure, exposed to icy winds, is one that animal rescuers at Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL) won’t soon forget. Snow Mageddon, as the dog was later named, was first spotted by a concerned neighbor who noticed him peering out from the skeletal remains of a house. The neighbor quickly alerted SRSL, who dispatched their chief life saving officer, Donna Lochmann, to the scene. According to SRSL’s Facebook post, the dog had climbed a steep staircase to the second floor and was too frightened to come back down. With no walls to block the gusts, the wind tore through the space, offering little comfort to the stranded pup.

Lochmann, who has rescued countless dogs from similarly dire situations, recognized the urgency of this case. A historic snowstorm was just hours away, and the frigid temperatures were already taking a toll. “We were only there for about 10 minutes, but we couldn’t feel our hands or fingers by the time we leashed him up,” SRSL reported. The rescue team navigated the rubble-strewn staircase and found Snow Mageddon visibly shaken, unsure of how to respond to his would-be saviors.

After some gentle coaxing, the pit bull slowly approached Lochmann, allowing her to slip a leash around his neck. From there, he was transported to SRSL’s veterinary clinic, where he received a full medical evaluation and, perhaps more importantly, warmth and rest. “We rescued him a few hours ago, and he has been sound asleep in a blanket ever since,” the organization shared. It was a small but significant victory: one more dog safe from the elements, thanks to timely intervention and community awareness.

In the days following Snow Mageddon’s rescue, SRSL put out a call for temporary foster homes. The shelter was preparing for an influx of strays displaced by the storm, and every open kennel could make a difference. That’s when Kara and Dan, a local couple, saw Snow Mageddon’s story online.
