A bill in the State Assembly, called the 'CARE' law by supporters, would allow people to claim tax credits for expenses related to caring for up to two pets. It is designed to help offset everyday and medical costs for pets.
Under the proposal, owners could receive up to $150 per pet for everyday items such as food, leashes, litter, carriers, and toys. They could also get up to $300 per pet for veterinary expenses, including check-ups, medications, tests, and emergency care.
The total potential credit for two pets could reach $900 per year. It's important to note that the tax credit would not automatically be paid. Taxpayers would need to document actual expenses for their pets when filing their taxes.
The bill has been introduced and referred to committee, but it has not yet become law. It would only apply to expenses for taxable years beginning in 2026 or later.

Because it is a state-level proposal, it does not apply federally or outside New York. Pet owners in other states will not see this benefit unless similar laws are passed locally.
