These Adorable Cat Breeds for Kids Make the Perfect Family Pets, According to a Vet
Choosing the right cat for your family can feel like a big decision—especially when kids are involved. The good news? There are certain cat breeds that tend to shine in households with children, thanks to their gentle nature, playful energy, and ability to adapt to busy environments.“Breeds like the Ragdoll, Maine Coon, Birman, and American Shorthair are often excellent for families with children,” says Dr. Nita Vasudevan, Veterinarian at Embrace Pet Insurance. “These cats are generally known for being tolerant, gentle, and patient, which are ideal qualities when kids are learning how to respectfully interact with pets. Many of them also enjoy being handled and can adapt well to busy household environments.”
According to Dr. Vasudevan, the best family cats are usually those with calm, patient temperaments and affectionate natures. “Cats that aren’t overly skittish or territorial usually thrive in homes with children,” she explains. It’s also a bonus if a cat is playful, since kids often want a pet that actively engages with them. Breeds like Abyssinians, for example, are famously energetic and love games of chase, while Siamese cats tend to form strong, affectionate bonds with their people.Dr. Vasudevan also reminds families to think about lifestyle and personality. “Parents should consider both the breed’s general temperament and the individual cat’s personality,” she notes—making it key to meet a cat before adoption and teach children how to interact gently.
It’s hard to find a cat more relaxed than the ragdoll. Known for their gentle, affectionate nature, these big softies often go limp when picked up—hence the name. “Ragdolls and Maine Coons are affectionate, large, and gentle, often tolerating being carried or cuddled by kids,” says Dr. Vasudevan.
Like the Ragdolls, Maine Coons are affectionate giants with calm, dog-like personalities. They’re patient with children, playful without being rowdy, and incredibly loyal.
Sweet, social, and soft as a cloud, Birmans are often called “people cats.” They love companionship and adapt well to active homes. Their gentle temperament makes them ideal for children still learning to handle pets respectfully.
