African Grey Parrot’s Cute Little British Mannerism Couldn’t Be Sweeter – Parade Pets
We all know parrots are mimics, but sometimes, the things they choose to repeat can be downright hilarious. Our feathered friend, a vibrant green Amazon named Kiwi, has a particular fondness for echoing sounds and phrases he hears around the house. He squawks like the microwave, whistles like the tea kettle, and even perfectly imitates the ringtone on my phone. But recently, Kiwi has added a new gem to his repertoire: one of Mom’s most frequently uttered sayings.
Mom, a woman of boundless energy and a penchant for efficiency, has a phrase she uses almost reflexively when things aren’t going quite according to plan. It’s a slightly exasperated, but mostly good-natured, “Well, isn’t that just special?” She says it when the internet goes down, when she drops her keys, or when the grocery store is out of her favorite brand of coffee. It’s become so ingrained in our family’s lexicon that we barely even notice it anymore.
Until Kiwi started saying it.
The first time we heard it, we were completely taken aback. We were in the kitchen, Mom was attempting to bake a batch of cookies, and the oven decided to preheat at a glacial pace. Mom sighed, “Well, isn’t that just special?” Clear as a bell, a moment later, came Kiwi’s slightly squawky rendition of the same phrase. We all burst out laughing.
Now, it’s become his go-to comment for almost any situation. If someone accidentally bumps into his cage, he pipes up with, “Well, isn’t that just special?” If he doesn’t get his favorite nut treat, you guessed it: “Well, isn’t that just special?” It’s both incredibly amusing and slightly disconcerting to hear this little green bird channeling Mom’s sentiments.
The best part is the intonation. Kiwi has somehow managed to capture the exact inflection Mom uses – a perfect blend of sarcasm and resignation. It’s like having a tiny, feathered comedian constantly commenting on the absurdities of daily life.
Of course, this has led to some rather awkward moments. We had friends over for dinner last week, and as my dad was attempting to light the grill (which, naturally, wasn’t cooperating), Kiwi chimed in with his signature phrase. Our friends, unfamiliar with Kiwi’s quirky habit, exchanged confused glances. Mom had to explain that the parrot wasn’t being intentionally rude, he was just…being Kiwi.
We’ve tried to discourage him from repeating the phrase, mostly because we don’t want him to pick up any truly inappropriate language. But honestly, it’s hard to stay mad at a bird who delivers such perfectly timed comedic relief. We’ve even started anticipating his “Well, isn’t that just special?” moments, and sometimes we find ourselves egging him on, just to hear his hilarious imitation.
Kiwi’s latest linguistic acquisition has definitely added a new layer of entertainment to our household. It’s a constant reminder that life is full of unexpected moments, and sometimes, all you can do is laugh – especially when your parrot perfectly encapsulates your feelings in a single, perfectly delivered phrase.
