SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — Efforts are underway to boost veterinary tourism in Baja California to provide care for pets belonging to U.S. residents.
Atzimba Villegas, president of the state’s Health Tourism Association, noted that, along with their campaign to bring more Americans south of the border for veterinary care, they are also promoting health services, assisted care for retirees, wellness, holistic and longevity treatments, among others.
He mentioned that people who come to Baja California seeking medical care for their dogs and cats often stay for several days generating a positive economic impacts for hotels and restaurants and for those who work at the veterinary clinics.
Villegas told the El Sol de Tijuana they have been conducting a survey among the various sectors to see who benefits from the arrival of visitors seeking medical or veterinary care.

“The objective of this initiative is to identify districts within the state where medical centers are emerging in order to concentrate services and offerings, in various forms, in those specific locations,” he said.
