Brutus the Bulldog will go to great lengths to avoid going inside. In a hilarious video shared to social media, big Brutus made a valiant attempt at playing dead to avoid the end of outdoor playtime. It took two grown women to lift and carry the precious pup inside in the charming video that has fans laughing right along with Brutus’ humans.

In the video, two women can be seen laughing while attempting to corral the Bulldog inside. Instead of complying, Brutus lays on his back with a paw in the air in hopes of being mistaken for deceased. Undeterred, the two ladies carefully pick Brutus up and gently haul him inside. As the women labor to carry him inside, Brutus flexes his acting skills and continues to pretend like he’s dead.

"Two blondes and a bulldog named Brutus… what could possibly go wrong?!?! 🥴😂 Brutus is a puppy and he likes to roll over and play Dead so he doesn’t have to go back inside… and this is what happens lol!" they captioned the video, which is earning accolades and support from Brutus’ legions of fans.

It’s pretty clear Brutus is playing dead to avoid going inside, but there are many reasons dogs go on a movement strike. Some dogs play dead to avoid activity like walking, while others recognize it’s an effective tactic when in need of attention. Anxious, overwhelmed, or exhausted dogs may also stop in their tracks and surrender to the ground, while some may play dead to avoid doing something they don’t like.

Like children, a savvy dog may quickly figure out which behaviors get mom and dad’s attention, and which get the canine out of doing things he or she would prefer not to.
