Critter Corner: Hunting season is here; how to keep your dogs safe – InsideNoVa.com
Deer-hunting season is underway in Virginia. But do you know the seasons for ducks, bears and migratory birds? What about fur-bearing animals? Do you know when bow hunting season is versus rifles? What about trapping regulations? Do you know where hunting is permitted? What about safety for you and your dog during hunting seasons?
It is your responsibility to learn the specifics for different hunting seasons – what is done when and where. For example, rifles, bows and muzzleloaders have separate times during the overall deer season. The next thing is knowing where hunting is permitted.
The first thing that came up for me is that hunting is not permitted in Prince William County. This is inaccurate. Hunting is allowed in certain areas. For example, hunting is prohibited in Prince William Forest Park (operated by the National Park Service). However, many state parks, including Leesylvania, allow hunting.
The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (dwr.virginia.gov), is the best resource for this information. If you are considering a trip to neighboring states, please check with their departments of natural resources.
If you choose to hike in areas where hunting might occur, be visible and heard. Wear at least a blaze orange hat. Better would be a hat, vest and cover for a backpack. Your dog should wear a blaze orange jacket. There are reflective orange collars available, but they may not be as visible, especially with a heavy coated dog.
