No longer are we fitting pets into our homes; 2026 is the year of making our houses fit for our pets. As part of a broader move towards designing homes for every member of the family, even the fluffy ones with four paws, interior designers are saying integrated pet features – like built-in dog baths and pet refuges – are the some of the interior trends gaining the most ground in 2026. And it’s not just about getting your hands on the latest trending dog bed or cute new pet toys – it’s about intentionally designing your home to be fit for purpose from the architectural level. “Homes are evolving to reflect the way people really live: balancing family, pets, and work while remaining warm and inviting,” Sydney-based architect Georgina Wilson points out.Plus, with a suite of home appliances featuring pet-friendly AI technology being released, our non-human inhabitants have never been better-footed.
There are plenty of ways people are designing their home architecture to care for their pets, from dog wash stations to pet nooks, and pull out feeding stations.

“It might sound like a luxury, but in reality, [built-in dog baths] are a practical solution that make life so much easier,” says Georgina Wilson. Instead of washing your dog in the shower or laundry sink, resulting in slippery pups, plenty of stress, and a sore back, Aussies are choosing to install a pup-friendly wash zone, with a non-slip base, raised walls, a handheld tap and storage spaces for soaps and shampoos. “A small wash area tucked into a laundry or mudroom keeps muddy paws under control and means less chaos when you walk in the door.” This laundry sink from Wild Orchid Spaces encapsulates this, with a clever sink that doubles as a dog wash station.
As much as we love having them around us at all times, dogs want to tuck themselves away in an enclosed, den-like space to enjoy some undisturbed rest. The couch in the middle of a busy, bustling house isn’t always the best place for them to catch up on sleep as it can leave them feeling exposed and on high-alert, but not everyone wants a large metal crate in the middle of their home. But, a tucked-away nook built into cabinets in lower traffic parts of the home can be the perfect solution, with the surrounding walls giving them a sense of security and the quiet space helping them to decompress. This muted grey-green joinery-turned-pet nook by EB Interiors is the perfect sleeping spot for furry family members (above), and the built-in dog bed (below) by House Nine Design makes a comfy dozing station.
