Florida-based Elite Treats has recalled a batch of dog treats that could be contaminated with salmonella. Labeled "Elite Treats Chicken Chips for Dogs," the product was sold to Florida Hardware, LLC, which distributed the treats to feed stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

According to the recall notice, just one lot of 6-ounce packages is affected. The treats come in a black-and-gold bag marked with lot number 24045 and an expiration date of 04/2027. A third-party laboratory discovered the salmonella contamination while testing unsold packages from the same lot.

Pets infected with salmonella can become lethargic and have diarrhea, vomiting, or decreased appetite. If your dog ate the recalled product and exhibits symptoms, contact your veterinarian.

"In other cases, pets can be infected without showing symptoms," the U.S. Food & Drug Administration notes. "Infected pets, even if they do not show symptoms, can act as carriers and transfer salmonella through their feces and saliva into the home environment and to people and other pets in the household."

Salmonella can cause serious infections in people, especially young children, seniors, and those with weakened immune systems. If you experience gastrointestinal symptoms, pain, fever, or other signs of infection, call your doctor.
