HONOLULU (Island News) – The Hawaiian Humane Society (HHS) is advising pet owners to be aware of the upcoming holiday season that can present hidden dangers for companion animals.
“Thanksgiving is a wonderful time for families to gather, but the holiday brings unique risks for our pets. A little preparation can prevent a veterinary emergency and ensure everyone in the family, including our four-legged members, has a safe and happy holiday,” shared Anna Neubauer, HHS president and CEO.
Many traditional holiday foods are toxic to pets, including chocolate, xylitol (frequently found in sugar-free items), grapes and raisins, onions and garlic and alcoholic beverages.
Although you may want to share some turkey bones with your pet, it can possibly splinter and cause serious internal injuries to them. Even rich foods that aren’t considered toxic can cause indigestion or pancreatitis in pets unaccustomed to fatty meals.
