Kmart shoppers have been warned about the retailer's "bestselling" $10 item that's designed for your four-legged friends.

From the average $21.3 billion Australians spend on their pets each year, the latest national pet survey by Animal Medicines Australia found a staggering $1.4 billion went toward products and accessories.

Kmart has leaned in, spruiking $10 Satin Stripe Pyjamas as a cute sleepwear option for your cat or dog to ensure "your companion stays warm and comfortable". They've even released a set for owners to match their pets.

But Sydney Animal Hospitals vet Dr Zoe Pimlott told Yahoo Lifestyle that dressing up cats and dogs can be "distressing" for some of them and warned owners to take cues from their animal.

"I don't think it's acceptable to push an animal to wear clothing for our enjoyment if it's going to be stressing them out," Pimlott said.
