Local artists release benefit album for three-legged pets (100% satire, fake news!)
On Friday, Jan. 9, Asheville Music Professionals will release Tripod Tunes, a benefit album for three-legged animals. All proceeds from sales will go to the Asheville-based nonprofit Aww So Cute, which provides veterinary care, rehabilitation services, foster care and adoption services for “pets who, for whatever reason — no judgment — just so happen to be missing an appendage.”
The 74-track collection features such originals as honky-tonk country group Hearts Gone South’s “Hop-along Hound,” Andrew Scotchie’s psychedelic “Phantom Paw Syndrome (PPS)” and The Deathbots’ punk anthem “WTF Happened?” Also included is a reworking of Patti Page’s immortal pet store classic, renamed “(How Much Is That Amputee) Doggie In The Window,” and the all-star U.S.A for Africa reimagining, “We Are the Nub.”
In addition, singer/songwriter/guitarist/educator/all-around-good-guy Joe Hooten (Tin Roof Echo; Pinkeye) yet again worked his connections with R.E.M., resulting in their first new track in decades, “Everybody Limps.”

Drop of Sun Studios in West Asheville donated its space and engineering services, with co-founders Alex Farrar and Adam McDaniel also providing mixing and mastering services at no charge in exchange for the coveted/mysterious executive producer status.
Participating artists were encouraged to bring what Farrar calls “their well-behaved animals, however many legs they have” to the recording sessions. After much sniffing, barking and “other dog-park shenanigans,” as well as “very aggressive behavior by a couple of cats on leashes,” the pets achieved a truce, and the marathon two-week experience commenced.
