Melinda Messenger: I bought a convertible Mini for my pets – The Times

The model turned psychotherapist would walk to school with Go-Cat in her pockets to spoil the local cats. A stray doberman used to escort her to the shops and she’s now bought a convertible so her pets can feel the breeze in their fur. All the animals are allowed on the beds so if they get too muddy she bathes them in the bidet.
Peggy’s the eldest, she’s a 15-year-old Jack Russell. Bramble, our brindle tricoloured cat, is 14. Bear’s a pomeranian with only three working legs, bless her heart. She’s eight. Tyson, my son’s American bulldog, is four. And Coco, a seven-month-old ragdoll cat, belongs to my daughter Evie, but we all live together.
Peggy was on her own and I don’t like having just one dog — I don’t think it’s fair because they’re so social. So we were looking for a little dog and an advert for Bear popped up on Pets4Homes. It’s a site that sometimes has ads for animals that are unwanted and being rehomed.

Bear looked forlorn and a bit bedraggled, and we couldn’t resist her. We went to see her and all the other pups in her litter had gone — people had said they wanted her but then didn’t.
She was so tiny, my feeling as soon as I saw her was: “Oh gosh, this poor little dog is not going to survive a week.” I couldn’t leave her so we paid for her, brought her home and I took her straight to the vet. The vet said she was incredibly small and had a birth defect with her leg that meant she probably wouldn’t ever be able to walk on it.
