My Dog's Halloween Costume Is Just $20 at PetSmart – People.com

Seeing pets dressed up in Halloween costumes comes second only to candy as the best part of the holiday. After five years of admiring the cute and clever outfits from afar, I finally decided this was the year my dog, Emily, would join in the festivities. This choice was made even easier when I got the chance to test a dog costume from PetSmart.

After perusing the hundreds of options available on the site, I instantly landed on this adorable and simple two-piece banana set that seemed comfortable and easy enough to put on her. Right now, it’s included in PetSmart’s online-only sale with code SAVE20. 

The main part of this costume — the banana peel — wraps around her neck and stomach and is secured with a stretchy hook and loop fastener. It was a fuss-free process getting her in the costume, and she didn’t seem to mind wearing it around the house. This piece is made from a cushiony and soft material that holds its shape but isn’t too stiff, and I like that it allows my dog to comfortably walk, sit, and lie down to relax. 

The second element in the costume is the headpiece, which was admittedly difficult to keep on my dog. Like most dogs, she isn’t a fan of anything on her head and, despite the strong velcro fastener, she quickly knocked it off her head (but was patient enough to let me get a photo of her in it at least). Thankfully, the costume, which features a collared neckline that looks like a peeling banana, feels complete whether she has the second piece on or not. 

While the brand doesn’t offer a size guide on the site, I was able to accurately guess which option worked best based on other jackets and apparel I’ve purchased for her in the past. This method worked well for me, and the costume fit her well. The brand recommends spot cleaning any messes for easy maintenance, and I also appreciate that it folds up nicely for easy storage when not in use.
