There are more than 400 types of dog breeds in the world, and yet, you may not have ever seen or heard of some of them, especially when their numbers are scarce. The American Kennel Club recognizes 20 breeds considered rare, and one of them is pretty special.
This rare dog breed is the Norwegian Lundhund, and there are only an estimated 1,500 to 3,000 left in existence. With their wildly unique traits, these giant fox-looking dogs deserve the spotlight!
If this is the first you've seen one of these pups, same! On the verge of complete extinction in the 1960s, Norwegian Lundehunds are making a slow comeback with strategic breeding. An estimated 900 of these numbers live in Norway, originally bred for hunting Puffins (who are now a protected species).
These days, if you find one of these rare cuties, they're more likely to be competing in agility than hunting anything, but it's their appearance that's really cool.

They have six toes with extra paw pads, a neck that cranes so far back it touches the spine, triangular ears that fold shut, and shoulders flexible enough that they can stretch their forelegs to the side, which the AKC calls a "rotary gait." They're just really cool dogs!
