Ontario SPCA reminds you to watch pets for hypothermia as region battles extreme cold

Extreme cold temperatures are putting everyone at risk this weekend, including pets. The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society are warning to keep an eye on dogs while outside. Prolonged exposure to extreme cold puts them at risk of developing frostbite or hypothermia.
As cute as winter jackets are for dogs, they don’t protect them enough from the chilly temperatures the region is expected to see.
They also warn to keep pets from play on or near ice. Waterways may not be solidified enough and pets could fall through.

“Even a short time in severe cold can be dangerous for animals,” says Dr. Joey Tang, Interim Medical Director, Ontario SPCA and Humane Society. “By watching for signs of discomfort and making small adjustments to your routine, you can help keep your pets safe this winter.”
Be wary of your vehicle, cats may try to sleep under the hood after a car is turned off as the heat attracts them. Knocking on the hood or honking a horn can detour them away before heading onto roads.
