Pet safety ahead of Halloween, adoption event in Columbus | 10tv.com
COLUMBUS, Ohio — It’s officially spooky season, that time of year when costumes, candy and cute pets in tiny outfits take over!
With Halloween just a few weeks away, many pet owners are already planning festive looks for their four-legged family members. But before you break out the costumes and candy, experts say there are a few safety concerns to keep in mind.
Vitt says one of the biggest risks for pets comes from the constant door-opening during trick-or-treating. Dogs and cats can easily get startled and slip outside.
“It’s important that all pets are microchipped and wearing ID tags,” Vitt said. “That way, if they do get out, they can be identified and returned home quickly.”
Pet costumes can be fun, but not all are created equal. Vitt recommends avoiding any outfits with loose materials, beads or small accessories that could be chewed off and swallowed.
