A pet’s ‘cuteness’ can influence intentions to book Airbnbs and rental stays, suggests new study
Does a Cute Pet Boost Your Airbnb Booking? Science Says Yes!
Thinking of booking that adorable Airbnb? You might be swayed by more than just the comfy bed and great location! New research reveals that seeing a furry friend in the listing photos can significantly impact your decision.
A study published in the International Journal of Hospitality Management suggests that “cute” pets can make a host seem warmer and more approachable, reducing the “psychological distance” between host and guest. Professor Lu Lu from Temple University found that potential guests are more likely to book a stay when a cute animal is featured in the listing.
Why? It boils down to the “baby schema” concept: those irresistible features we find endearing in babies (big eyes, small noses) translate to animals as well. These cute characteristics trigger our protective instincts, influencing our choices, including where we choose to stay.
The study, which involved multiple experiments, showed that listings featuring “high-cuteness” pets (think fluffy dogs and cuddly cats) were significantly more likely to be booked than those with “low-cuteness” pets. So, a strategically placed picture of a charming pet could be a real advantage for Airbnb hosts!
However, if you’re the type who craves unique experiences, a pet might not sway you as much. The research indicated that individuals with a “strong need for uniqueness” were less influenced by the presence of animals.
This trend coincides with a rise in pet ownership since the pandemic, fueled by the positive impact pets have on mental well-being. So, next time you’re browsing Airbnb, take note of those furry faces – they might just be the reason you click “book”!
