(NEXSTAR) – A Florida-based pet food company is recalling dog treats sold in several states that may be contaminated with salmonella, according to a recent FDA announcement.

The canine snacks made by Elite Treats, of Boca Raton, Florida, are called “Elite Treats Chicken Chips for Dogs,” and were sold in 6-ounce black and gold packages. Those under recall have the lot number 24045 and an expiration date of 04/2027 on the back side.

Just like in humans, salmonella exposure can sicken pets, causing lethargy, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, fever and a decreased appetite.

Because humans often hand treats to their dogs, there is also a risk of illness for pet owners, who are advised to “thoroughly wash their hands” after feeding or having contact with their dog. If the treats touch any surface areas, those should be cleaned as well, the FDA advises.

Salmonella causes about 1.35 million infections in the United States each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Common symptoms include diarrhea, fever, vomiting and stomach cramps, among others.
