Shelter Dogs Receive a Special Meal on Thanksgiving and Their Reactions Are Adorable

The San Diego Humane Society surprised their rescue pets with a special Thanksgiving treat by serving them their own "Barks-giving" meals in celebration of the holiday on Thursday, Nov. 27.

It was a big order to fill for the staff, who have approximately 1,400 animals in their care over the holiday weekend. However, with the help of Lionel’s Legacy in partnership with Lionel’s Lunchbox, they were able to serve 350 dog meals and 50 cat meals on Thanksgiving.

Curious what a "Barks-giving" meal involves? Well, you may be surprised to learn that it's not so far off from the foods included in a typical feast prepared for humans like turkey, green beans and "stuffing" safe for pets, a spokesperson for San Diego Humane Society told Newsweek.

The pets also enjoyed rice and sweet potatoes, per the spokesperson, and beets for the dogs. Each meal is made with a focus on quality and healthy ingredients, including fresh greens and protein. they said.

While the animals in the San Diego shelter are waiting for a home to call their own, the shelter made their current living situation feel a home away from home with a meal to make the day feel extra special.
